This is a Cricut Maker and Explore series mat tray extender.
This keeps the mat straight and prevents it from bending down which can make your projects come off of the mat. Keeping the mat flat helps with project quality and adhesion.
 
Center connections bar is used with the Maker series and for the Explore series, only two the separate bars are used.
